Artist Statement
Through art I explore the space between existence and memory, the might-have-been and the is. I am interested in the possibilities which exist before actions dictate one path or another. Artmaking becomes both the map which leads me through these spaces and the record of my reflections and explorations there. In creating my work I use structures and practices based on music. Rhythm and repetition provide an armature, a structure which allows me to improvise and seek out spaces between notes, places where several things might occur. Drawing on methods learned in musical training, I work methodically and repetitively, always building on past experiences and lessons learned in order to reach new understanding. Even without a musical instrument in my hand, I am always listening to my work as much as looking at it. Rather than beginning with a preconceived vision I work fluidly, letting new marks respond to and resonate with those already put down.
